Should I get a safe? It’s a common enough question, especially among people worried about what will happen to their private papers and other expensive items if their house is burglarized.
If you have a firearm of any kind in the home, the answer is a resounding yes. You’ll need a safe place to store your guns when you aren’t home or using them, especially if you have children. On the other hand, you might be wondering about your important papers and other small items that might need an extra layer of protection.
Every home should have a fireproof safe to store important documents. These aren’t necessarily items that are “priceless.” Rather, they’re items that would be difficult to replace or could result in extensive problems if they were damaged, stolen or lost. You’ll want to store:
- birth certificates
- social security cards
- data storage devices containing family photos (some source of backup for all those images you don’t want to lose–especially the ones that only exist on your hard drive)
- important legal documents: your will, living wills, power of attorney paperwork, etc
- spare keys and the titles to your vehicles
But what about your small valuables? Is it worth investing in a fireproof safe for them if you already have an alarm system and other methods in place to protect them? Well…
- Are these items that are irreplaceable–particularly of sentimental value? That extra layer of protection might be the difference between an item snatched in a robbery and an item left protected.
- Do you want that extra layer of protection for your valuables? If the answer is yes, it’s certainly worth investing in a safe large enough to help contain your jewelry, coins, and other investments.
