There is a lot to love when it comes to social media. Sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are a great way to keep up with friends and family that you don’t get to see on a regular basis. However, if you’re going to engage in social media, there are a few things you should be careful about. We have all grown so accustomed to over-sharing online, that we may not notice when we are sharing information that can put us at risk.
Here are a few social media security tips security tips to keep in mind:
- Don’t post your vacation plans. Wait to post your vacation updates until you have returned home from your trip. Announcements that you are about to take a vacation, or posts featuring your exciting selfies from the beach are like an advertisement that your home is sitting empty. Once you are back from vacation, feel free to share that you have returned home from a great trip and share your photos then, not while you are away.
- Turn off location services on your mobile apps. When you update your social media from your phone you may be inadvertently providing people with your location 24/7. Be smart about how much information you share about your current location.
- Be selective with your “friends.” It is easy to forget how much personal information you share about your life through photos and updates on social media sites. Don’t accept friend requests from anyone you don’t know in real life. If you wouldn’t invite them into your home to sit down and look through photo albums with you, don’t add them to your social media circles.
